It was announced today that Schapelle Corby has been granted yet another reduction in her prison sentence. A further five years will be slashed off her original 20 year sentence and there are reports that she could be back in Australia as early as August. When Corby does return, what sort of welcome mat will Australia lay out for her?
There is a growing trend in Australia of, if not celebrating, then at least normalising and assimilating criminals and dangerous people. The traditional ‘Aussie Larrikin’ sentiment is being abused by those who want to alter their reputation, rewrite their legacy and by commercial interests who seek to profit from their characterisation.
Think Pauline Hanson, who went from caustic, racist politician to ‘celebrity’ contestant on Channel Seven’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’. Her alleged star is not one that should be welcomed into Australian living rooms for family viewing. Think Chopper Read, once notorious hit man, now an almost playful larrikin uncle – he has become so caricatured that we forget what a brute he was. Think Carl Williams, another hit man and cold blooded killer who, thanks to Channel Nine, became the ‘baby faced funny guy from Underbelly’. And the Bra Boys, a gang involved in drug smuggling, thuggery and murder, with some surfing on the side, who released a DVD in an attempt to soften their image it became a national hit. I am sure there are many more examples out there.
This is what I fear Australia will do with Schapelle Corby. Already she is seen by many as having been wrongfully convicted and there is an undercurrent, at least I feel it, of racism entwined in her case. I feel that many Australians still give her the benefit of the doubt, because she is our typical white Aussie surfer girl, who has been convicted by a corrupt, foreign and, worst all – Muslim government. A sympathy which was not extended by mainstream Australia to Nguyen Tuong Van, when he was hanged in 2005 at Singapore’s Changi Prison for drug trafficking offences.
Should Corby return to our shores this August she should not be welcomed and pitied as a poor, innocent, wrongfully convicted little Aussie battler. She is not escaping Shawshank. No doubt the temptation will be there whenever does return. The commercial television and women’s magazines hounds will be unleashed with boogie board bags full of cash. Corby will be thrust offers of prime time slots, book deals and telemovies. Inevitably some will stick and we will have to hear her poor sob story and ordeals inside Indonesian prisons. I will not be tuning in but I can understand the interest and can handle that for a while. What I could not handle is turning on the television to see Schapelle Corby ‘Dancing with the Stars’ or Schapelle Corby invading the Big Brother house or Schapelle Corby cooking an Indonesian speciality on Celebrity Masterchef or the Schapelle Corby spread in FHM.
Then I will know Australia has really got something really wrong.

Who gives a crap if she makes a bit of cash when she gets out. The media have made enough out of her horrible situation. She has suffered enough no matter what you think about her guilt or innocence. (I believe she may be innocent).

I care if she makes a buck out of it, because I believe she is guilty. The others mentioned in my article should be have proceeds of crime used against them too. David Hicks is an interesting case as someone who had proceeds of crime against them for a retrospective law.
Whether Corby has ‘suffered enough’ or not usually seems to depend on whether one believes she is guilty or not. As you believe she is innocent I can understand your viewpoint, however, I believe she is guilty and her ‘suffering’ has less effect on me.

If you have read and researched all the available information and have come to the conclusion, after rational consideration, that Schapelle is guilty then you are entitled to your opinion. There is a wealth of evidence as Marie Siochana and Kaz Cook have alluded to that would put doubts about Schapelle’s “guilt” in any intelligent mind. Personally, I believe Schapelle is totally innocent, equally, I believe you have not bothered to read any of Expendable [ do you even know of this project ] and your comments are no more than uninformed opinion. When [if] you can come back and say you have read and researched all the available information and put up a credible defense of your opinion that is when you may gain a little credibility.
If Corby is guilty than Qantas, Sydney airport and the AFP are off the hook. No security problems, but if Corby is innocent the cesspit of crime and corruption that is Sydney airport will be exposed. Detective Sargeant Christopher Laycock was jailed on April 4, 2012, the son of a former Assistant Commissioner of Police, John Laycock. It has taken almost 8 years for Laycock to meet his fate. The NSW Crime Commission recorded a conversation with 2 of Laycock’s criminal mates regarding the pickup of Marijuana from Sydney Airport on the 8th October 2004. Recognise the Date?? It is the same day that Schapelle corby flew to Bali. But what meets the eye here is something of a mirage, his last hearing on March 29, 2012, before he was sentenced, was closed to the public on account of a mysterious 30 page “naming and shaming” document . The Australian Associated Press has subsequently reported what the court has instructed them to report. The real story here is not only what is in that document and why it has taken 8 years for Laycock to meet his fate but what the NSW Crime Commission and the AFP have hidden from the public for almost 8 years. The NSW Crime Commission recognised the significance of the recording with Laycock’s criminal mates and consulted a named officer within the AFP. Both parties sat on it. Schapelle was never told, no one was ever told until the Expendable Project obtained the minutes.
When Mick Keelty (Commissioner of Police) came out in the press stating ” there is no evidence to suggest corrupt bagage handlers” 2 weeks before Schapelle’s verdict HE LIED, he also knew what message that would send to Indonesia. In fact Keelty knew that drug syndication was rife at Sydney airport, he had the Kessing Reports, the tape of the NSW Crime Commission and Operation Mocha (Investigation into drug syndication at Sydney airport) was in progress on the very day Schapelle flew to Bali. Assistant Director of the NSW Crime Commission, Mark Standen was jailed in November 2011 for his role in drug syndication at Sydney airport it took 7 years for Mark Standen to be Jailed.
In 2005 William Moss also known as William Miller ( the criminal friend of Detective Laycock) came out in the press in 2005 and said he was suppose to pickup the marijuana on the day Schapelle flew to Bali. William Moss/miller sued the ABC …The press ridiculed him and the ABC said that they would ruin him and bankrupt him ., The ABC had defamed him on a page on their website When the Expendable project got a hold of the NSW Crime Commission minutes of a meeting regarding the recorded conversation The ABC paid Moss/Miller out and took down the defamatory web page. A copy of the cheque paid to Moss/Miller is on the Expendable project website.
Prime Minister, John Howard and his mate Max Moore-Wilton ( Head of Sydney Airport) knew about all of this and they did nothing. They covered up all the evidence that PROVED Schapelle was innocent. John Howard, Mick Keelty, Alexander Downer and Christopher Ellison witheld vital information from a court that would have helped free Schapelle!!

All Schapelle’s appeals have been exhausted, if there was actual footage of a baggage handler putting the marijuana into Schapelle’s bag, the Indonesians would not overturn her conviction. The fact remains that high ranking officials new that her bag was tampered with and sat on this information. What is with the vitriol Nathan? You seem to have a vested interest in this.

Today’s news, that the Gillard government has refused a pardon to Allan Kessing, is not just another nail in the coffin of any shred of decency from the Australian establishment, it was totally predictable.
The judgement was delivered by Gillard puppet, Jason Clare:
But let’s scratch the surface a little.
This is directly about Schapelle, and the revelations of The Expendable Project. This is about an honest and decent man standing tall against the Howard regime’s cover up of truth at Sydney Airport, and equally, against the sacrifice of Schapelle’s life.
This is about a courageous man spelling out what Keelty was doing, that the airport was awash with criminals (from top to bottom), and that there was no way that Schapelle could be guilty. This was a man choosing truth, ahead of self interest.
Everything that The Expendable Project has published has proved him to be 100% correct in every assertion.
The reality is that the Gillard government had already picked sides. From the moment that they refused to accept a copy of the Transit Report from the Expendable team in August 2011, they closed ranks around the corrupt in Howard’s regime: those who perverted the course of justice, perjured themselves, and routinely lied to the public. Those who sold an innocent life.
From that moment, from the moment they decided that The Expendable Project had to be suppressed rather than embraced, they chose to stand by the corrupt and the criminal, and against truth. They chose political expediency, and the interest of their buddies, ahead of integrity and justice.
Having taken that path, there was no way they would pardon Allan Kessing, because doing so would endorse every word of truth he has spoken… and de facto, the Expendable Project.

I believe in Schapelle’s innocence and found out about the EP when they were getting ready to spread the so called “reports”. I believed they would be able to help Schapelle. It was when their modus operandi was beginning to become unacceptable (threatening pple) that I started asking questions. And oh boy that is not allowed. Me asking about K Bax’s credentials, seeing she was making statements only a psychiatrist can make, resulted in me getting blocked. K. Bax never replied…
The biggest problem with the EP is that they are using Schapelle’s name while insulting and attacking pple, this without her ever giving them permission to do so.

And Max if someone had footage of the dope being placed in her bag or someone would stand up and confess and be able to prove they did it YES it would go to the high court and a QC would present new evidence and her conviction would be quashed!

To Kaz, John, Marie, Maz, Nathan and all other EP supporters who have read had this blog. I have watched the first hour of the EP documentary and it has done nothing to convince me Corby is innocent. I almost turned it off after the first 10 mins because it is so ridiculous but I persevered.
It is a poorly made film with some incredibly stupid accusations and lines of argument, such as the statement that the ‘truth’ of the Corby case would damage Indo-Aus relations – do you remember a little issue called East Timor in 1999? Both countries got through that and it was much bigger than the Corby case.
Secondly, implying that the ABC is an ‘organ of the state?’ Are you serious? If anything it was consistently accused of being anti-Howard during his reign.
The is a huge amount of circumstantial evidence, newspaper headlines, related stories (Kessing, Lee-Rogers, Ray Cooper) and unattributed quotes in the video however the film makers fail to link any of these directly to the Corby case. Malcolm McCauley, who is used in the film to back EP claims about prison photographs and states he did not know Corby before then has since been proven wrong. The film really went off the rail when it drew the Chaser and Good News Week into the ‘organs of the state conspiracy’ and it was not long after that I turned off, not being able to take any more.

FYI stublogs the expendable project researchers are not Doco makers and I agree the doco is poorly made but they did their best to get the info out there. Also FYI stublogs the doco was made over a year ago and since then a lot more evidence has come to light. Did you read anything on the site? Did you see the letter from Christopher Ellison to Mick Keelty stating that her bag was not recorded in the SACL system? Did you see the minutes of the meeting from the NSWCC re the secret recording? Did you see the Cheque from the ABC paid out to William Moss? Have you read the candidate sources report? You can hardly say you have researched anything, … Tried to post some links for you stublogs unfortunately it wont let me! Are you the only one who has this priviledge? Do your research as I said earlier don’t just scan over it. read it all!
Kaz, if the doco was made over a year ago perhaps EP should not have it on the site if it is inconsistent with the other information..? After I watched 1hr of the video I was not convinced that further research on the site would be worth my while. Some of the things you mentioned here (in this particular reply) were in the first 1hr and have not convinced me to look any further. There is far too much circumstantial evidence and not enough hard evidence. For now my position is that Schappelle Corby is guilty. You believe otherwise and good luck to you and your fight to prove her innocence.

Kath is an an advocate for FPSS and spoke privately to this man after reading the threats made by those two. Made sure he and his family were ok after seeing this deplorable behaviour from 2 of EP members on 60 minutes. And she encouraged them to phone police but they were nice enough to accept his apology for the phone call and threat on his life, another close escape for EP member/ members !!!

Diane here. For three days at the start of the month I was in court, at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Brisbane, with Mercedes Corby. We were fighting for the right fto access information on her sister Schapelle, which is held by the AFP. They are refusing to let her see it. They are suppressing it and hiding it from her.
We are pretty sure we know what is in the files, and what they prov
e. But they are censoring them, citing reasons like “in the national interest”, and “damage to international relations”, which are more important to them than justice, a life, and human rights.
I also have to express my disgust of the “no expense spared” use of taxpayer funds, to stop Schapelle getting access to information ON HERSELF.
Mercedes and I knew we were up against it when the AFP presented TWO Lawyers: one being the AFP lawyer, and the other from expensive private law firm, Clayton UTZ, both flown in from Canberra, both accommodated for three days at tax payer expense.
Four witnesses were also tele-linked from Canberra for interview. Proceedings were watched (one-way), from IGIS HQ in Canberra, via a camera in the courtroom (again, rather a lot of your $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$). They called in the Inspector-General of Intellegence and Security, her assistant, an AFP SES 1 Policy Manager, a commander of the AFP, and the FOI team leader for the AFP.
All were telling the judge how terrible it would be for the national interest, and the nation’s security, if the truth was revealed.
Seriously. This is exactly what was going on.

I tend to agree with you Stu. Though in the case of criminals profiting from crimes there is now at least some legislation (Proceeds of a Crime Act 2002 that is designed to trace, restrain and confiscate assets which are wholly or partly derived from crime or which have been used in the commission of a crime. However, it is not applied retrospectively. Interestingly, the funds raised from POA go back into rehabilitative programs, education etc… so there is something positive in it all.
